The health of 20 girl students suddenly deteriorated on Friday night after having food in a government SC girls Gurukul located in Bellampalli town of Mancherial district of Telangana, after which they were admitted to Bellampalli Government Hospital with immediate effect. This incident is being described as a case of food poisoning, which has once again exposed the claims of food safety in the residential educational institutions of the state and there is deep anger among the parents.
As soon as this news spread, there was chaos in the hospital premises. We ourselves saw how innocent girls were brought for treatment, struggling with pain. According to the information, there is suspicion of adulteration of rice or pulses in the dinner. Shortly after eating the food, the students started complaining of vomiting and severe stomach pain.
‘Everyone’s condition is stable now’
The Gurukul management initially tried to control the situation, but as the number of sick girl students increased, they were all rushed to the hospital with the help of ambulances. Doctors said that everyone’s condition is now stable and they are being given emergency treatment.
Many cases came to light from Telangana
This is not an isolated incident, but points to a major systemic failure. In the last few months, reports of food poisoning are continuously coming out from Gurukuls in Jagtial, Suryapet and Khammam districts of Telangana. Recently, a student even died in Jagtial, after which the government ordered strict action and promised inspection, but this incident in Bellampalli proves that nothing has changed at the ground level. The system is proving to be a complete failure in monitoring cleanliness in kitchens, quality of ration and mess managers.
Gurukuls are those institutions where children from poor families come with the hope of a bright future and not with diseases. Now the question arises that for how long will this negligence continue? The responsible authorities will have to take immediate cognizance of this negligence and ensure strict action against the culprits, so that the life of any innocent person is not in danger.
