41 years ago on 29 December, Congress had created history, till date no party has been able to break this record.

The day of 29th December is recorded as an unprecedented event in the electoral history of independent India. On 29 December 1984, Congress registered the biggest victory in the history of independent India’s parliamentary elections by winning 401 out of 508 seats in the Lok Sabha.

Although Congress had fought this election on the issue of removing corruption, the party crossed the electoral hurdle riding on the wave of sympathy.

In the year 1984, on October 31, the then Prime Minister of the country Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards and there was a wave of mourning in the entire country. In the elections held two months later, the people of the country voted for the Congress Party as a tribute to the late leader. The leadership of the party at that time was in the hands of his son Rajiv Gandhi.

2024: A passenger plane skidded off the runway at an airport in South Korea and crashed into a concrete wall, causing the plane to catch fire and kill 179 people.
