This journey is proving to be no less than a litmus test for the residents of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana who head to their native villages on the holy festival of Sankranti in Hyderabad. There has been a rush of vehicles on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway (NH-65) since Friday night. The situation is especially serious near Choutuppal, where incomplete road projects have completely slowed down the traffic flow.
After the announcement of official holidays in educational institutions, thousands of families bid farewell to Hyderabad in their personal vehicles, special buses and taxis since Friday night. The pressure on NH-65, which connects the capital to the districts of coastal Andhra and central Telangana, has suddenly increased by 200%.
Queues of vehicles up to 5 kilometers long
The most affected areas are Choutuppal Town and Pantangi Toll Plaza. Road widening and flyover construction work has been going on for the last several months in Choutuppal. In view of the Sankranti crowd, the administration had given instructions to stop the work, but due to the structures under construction, lack of service road and debris lying on the roads, the road has become narrow. Due to this, the queues of vehicles have become 3 to 5 kilometers long.
The passenger expressed his pain
Describing the pain of passengers stranded on the National Highway, a passenger said, “It took us three hours just to cross Choutuppal from Hyderabad. It is very tiring to be stuck in such a traffic jam in the scorching heat with small children and elderly people.” Not only is fuel being wasted due to vehicles crawling, but passengers are also having to struggle for drinking water and food. At the administrative level, Suryapet Police and Rachakonda Police have taken the help of drone cameras to handle the situation.
Authorities have advised commuters to use alternative routes such as the Narketpally-Nalgonda-Miryalguda route to reduce pressure on the main highway. This festival of Sankranti connects millions of people every year, but the slow pace of infrastructure is making this joyous journey difficult year after year.
