Smoke was seen rising from an apartment in Subramaniam Layout, East Bengaluru, at around 10:15 pm on January 3, 2026. When firefighters reached the spot, 34-year-old software engineer Sharmila D.K. was found inside a flat. The burnt body of was found. Initial investigation found it to be a short circuit, but the truth was much scarier than this.
The investigation took a turn when a close friend of the deceased expressed suspicion. After this the police registered a case of murder. When the forensic team examined the flat, no evidence of any kind of short circuit was found. The post-mortem report revealed the truth, investigation revealed that Sharmila did not die due to fire but due to suffocation.
With the help of evidence, the police succeeded in reaching the 18-year-old PUC student living in the same building. It is alleged that the student entered the flat through the sliding window at around 9:00 pm. He demanded sexual relations from Sharmila. When she protested, he suffocated Sharmila by pressing her mouth and nose, resulting in her death.
Took away the deceased’s phone
To destroy the evidence after the murder, the accused collected clothes and other items in an empty room and set it on fire to make the case look like an accident. While leaving, he also took Sharmila’s mobile phone with him. The police have arrested the accused. He is a resident of Virajpet and was living with his single mother in Bengaluru. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 103(1), 64(2), 66 and 238 of BNS, after which he has been sent to police custody for three days. Police say that all aspects related to the case are being thoroughly investigated and charge sheet will be filed soon.
