Following the death of Bangladesh student leader Sharif Usman Hadi, violence broke out in several areas of the capital Dhaka on Thursday. Since then the disturbance continues. Now news has come that Hadi’s funeral prayers have been canceled in Singapore. According to the High Commission of Bangladesh based in Singapore, the first Namaz-e-Janaza of Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Usman Hadi was to be held in Singapore, but the Singapore government did not allow it. For this reason it has been cancelled.
Bangladesh High Commission issued statement
Hadi’s first funeral prayer was to be held at Angulia Mosque in Singapore at 10 am. It was also revealed that his body has been sent to Bangladesh. A statement issued by the High Commission said, ‘Osman Hadi died last night at Singapore General Hospital. Because the authorities did not allow it. Therefore his funeral namaz will not be held in Singapore. The High Commission is saddened by this situation. We request Bangladeshi expatriates living in Singapore to respect the laws of Singapore. We pray for the departed soul. They apologize for them from their respective places.
Inquilab Manch has issued a statement. It said that a commercial flight of Bangladesh Airlines will depart with the body of Usman Hadi on Friday at 3:30 pm local time. The estimated time of landing at Dhaka is 6:05 PM.
Violence and unrest in Bangladesh
After Hadi’s death, there were reports of protests, vandalism and arson at many places including Dhanmondi, Shahbag in Dhaka. The mob attacked many places in Dhaka throughout the night. These include the offices of two major newspapers of Bangladesh. The mob attacked in many areas of the capital.
Amidst the violence, Chief Advisor to the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, addressed the nation at 11:20 pm on Thursday night. He has appealed to the people to maintain patience. Also appealed not to pay attention to any kind of inflammatory messages and rumours.
