Google Gemini New Feature: Google has taken a big step towards making online shopping easier with the help of Artificial Intelligence. The company has launched new AI-based shopping features that will allow users to complete purchases without leaving Google Search. Till now AI only helped in finding and comparing products but for payment the user had to go to a separate website.
What is Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?
The backbone of this new system is Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). It is an open framework designed to handle the entire shopping process. This includes everything from finding a product to checkout and post-purchase support. Google says that UCP has been designed in such a way that AI agents, merchants and payment services can work together easily.
System developed in collaboration with big brands
Google has developed this technology in collaboration with big retail partners like Shopify, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. In the coming time, users will be able to checkout directly from the product listing in Google Search’s AI Mode and Gemini app itself. At present this facility has been started in America and no official information has been given yet regarding its launch in India.
How the new checkout experience will work
Initially, UCP is being used for Search AI Mode and new checkout feature in Gemini app. American users will be able to pay directly through Google Pay. Information related to payment options and delivery will be automatically linked to Google Wallet. The company has also made it clear that PayPal support will also be added in the upcoming updates.
What changes can be seen ahead
Google plans to gradually expand this system to other countries and add more retailers. Apart from this, the company is also working on features like loyalty program, more smart product suggestions and personalized shopping experience.
Competition increases in AI shopping race
This new feature of Google puts it in direct competition with platforms like Microsoft, OpenAI and Perplexity. Microsoft’s Copilot already supports in-chat purchases in the US, where users can complete payments during a conversation. This feature works with the support of platforms like PayPal, Stripe and Shopify.
At the same time, ChatGPT and Perplexity have also moved towards conversational shopping. These platforms offer product search, comparison and guided shopping along with in-chat checkout.
