WhatsApp Ghost Pairing Scam: A new type of scam has arrived on the messaging app WhatsApp, in which hackers are targeting people by sending a link in the message. Those users who use WhatsApp on more than one device are most at risk. The name of this scam is GhostPairing and with its help scammers can read your private chats. What is WhatsApp Ghost Pairing?
In this scam, scammers send a message containing a link to people. This usually consists of a Facebook photo or a simple message saying ‘Look, I found your photo’ and a link below it. As soon as a user clicks on this link, the scammers secretly pair their device with the victim’s WhatsApp account. This way they can see your entire chatting in real-time. What is even more dangerous is that the user will not be aware of this pairing at all and scammers will continue to access his chats. The first such case came to light in the Czech Republic, but security researchers say that there is a danger of such cyber attacks in the entire world including India.
How to avoid such attacks?
- Do not click on the link given in any message from any unknown person.
- Before opening any message or attachment, verify the sender.
- For the safety of WhatsApp account, keep two-step verification enabled.
- Keep WhatsApp and your device’s software updated and do not use old versions.
- Keep checking the linked device by going to WhatsApp settings.
