The Supreme Court will hear on Thursday (January 15, 2026) the release of Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamil film ‘Jana Nayakan’. The film’s producer KVN Productions has challenged an interim order of the Madras High Court in the Supreme Court.
The bench of Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice Augustin George Masih will hear this petition. This matter is related to giving censor certificate to the film. The film was initially expected to get UA certificate, but controversy arose after some complaints.
The producers of the film presented the film before the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on 18 December and the board recommended a UA certificate with some cuts. The producers made the necessary changes, but the certificate was not issued. The board sent the film to the revising committee, against which the producers filed a petition in the Madras High Court.
On January 9, High Court Justice P.T. Asha’s single bench directed the Censor Board to immediately issue UA certificate. The court said that repeated consideration of complaints would create a worrying trend, but on the same day the board appealed to the division bench of the High Court. The Division Bench stayed the order of the Single Bench saying that the censor was not given adequate opportunity to present his case. Earlier the film was to be released on January 9, but it became uncertain after the stay of the Division Bench.
KVN Productions has filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court on January 12. This film is considered to be Vijay’s last film before his full entry into politics. Recently he has started his own party ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’.
The film ‘Jana Nayakan’ has been produced by KVN Productions and directed by H. Vinod. Pooja Hegde is in the lead roles with Thalapathy Vijay in the film. The producers said that the film will be released in four languages in 22 countries.
