Indian-American writer, model, TV host and Salman Rushdie’s ex-wife Padma Lakshmi said that the current times in America are dark. He expressed hope that in such times, his new book will inspire people from different communities to arouse curiosity about each other, communicate and connect. He also said that this period will probably become even darker, but in the end a ray of light will appear.

Padma Lakshmi’s new book ‘Padma’s All American: Tales, Travels and Recipes from Taste the Nation and Beyond’ is a collection of America’s rich culinary and diasporic diversity. At a time of growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the US and other parts of the world, Lakshmi hopes that her new book will arouse people’s curiosity about other communities and enable them to connect and connect with other cultures and countrymen.
“Our country is going through a very dark period right now and I regret to say that it will probably get even darker before the light comes back,” Lakshmi said during a talk organized in partnership with The Culture Tree at the New York Asia Society in the US last month.

When asked what she hopes her new book will teach people, Lakshmi said she hopes the book will make people more curious about their fellow Americans, their Cambodian Americans, their Peruvian Americans, their Nigerian Americans.
He said, ‘We all live in a very diverse country, especially in New York where the people living across the street speak different languages, eat different types of food, worship different gods and often because of these differences we do not go across the street, do not get to know them.’
She told Anu Sehgal, founder and CEO of The Culture Tree, ‘I hope you guys will take the time to read all the profiles because I met some extraordinary people, ordinary people but extraordinary stories and I want us to know each other better, so that we can interact with each other more.’
