What is Liquid Metal: Apple has been in the news for a long time about its first foldable iPhone and now a new leak related to it has come to light, which has created a stir in the tech industry. According to reports, Apple may introduce its first foldable iPhone by the end of this year. This device will come with a book-style folding design but its biggest feature may be its material.

Liquid Metal with Titanium in iPhone Fold!

According to information shared by user “yeux1122” on Korean platform Naver, Apple may use Liquid Metal in the hinge of the iPhone Fold. There is a possibility of titanium frame being given for the body of the phone. If this proves to be true then the iPhone Fold will be Apple’s first device in which Liquid Metal will be used on a large scale.

What is Liquid Metal and why is it special?

Liquid Metal, which is called Liquidmetal in technical language, is a special type of amorphous metal alloy. It was developed by the research team of California Institute of Technology. Unlike common metals, it does not have a crystalline structure, making it stronger, more flexible and does not get damaged quickly even under repeated pressure.

For this reason, Liquid Metal is considered very suitable for parts that undergo bending, opening and closing for long periods of time.

Why is Liquid Metal necessary for foldable iPhone?

The hinge is considered to be the weakest part in foldable smartphones. If heavy material like stainless steel is used in it, then the phone can become thick and heavy. Whereas Liquid Metal is light but also very strong.

Apple has already filed several patents related to hinges and moving parts of foldable devices, which mention materials like Liquid Metal. The material remains thin while still maintaining strength which is essential for an ultra-slim foldable design.

Big reason for ultra-slim design

According to reports, when iPhone Fold is unfolded, its thickness can be less than 5.6mm. Making a strong and reliable hinge in such a thin phone is a big challenge. Liquid Metal can become the solution to this problem, because it gives more strength in less space.

Apple and Liquid Metal’s old relationship

The relationship between Apple and Liquid Metal is not new. In the year 2010, Apple had made a special deal with Liquidmetal Technologies, under which the company got an exclusive license to use this material in consumer electronics.

However, till now Apple has limited the use of Liquid Metal to small parts, such as the SIM ejector tool. Using it on large and complex parts has been technically challenging but this picture can change with the iPhone Fold.

Possible features of iPhone Fold

According to the information revealed so far, iPhone Fold can have a 5.5-inch external display and a larger 7.8-inch internal screen. Both the displays will be OLED with high refresh rate.

There is a possibility of side-mounted Touch ID in place of Face ID. For performance, the upcoming A20 Pro chipset can be found in it, which will be more powerful than the A19 Pro used in iPhone 17 Pro.

Talking about camera setup, it can have a total of four cameras, two selfie cameras (one for each screen) and dual camera system at the back.

Launch timeline and expected price

Reports are indicating that Apple may launch its first foldable iPhone in September 2026. This launch can happen with iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

There is no official information regarding the price yet, but it is estimated that the price of iPhone Fold in America can be around $ 2,400, which is around Rs 2.15 lakh in Indian currency. If these leaks prove to be true then iPhone Fold could become not only Apple’s most expensive but also the most advanced iPhone.
