Osman Hadi Funeral: Mohammad Yunus, chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, pledged to carry forward the ideals of student leader and Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Usman Hadi. Attending Hadi’s funeral procession, Yunus said that Bangladesh has unitedly pledged to honor the thoughts and works of the young politician who tried to give a new direction to Bangladeshi politics.
Osman Hadi was a big leader of the student movement last year. He played an important role in ousting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. He was 32 years old. He was shot in Dhaka. This incident happened when he was starting his campaign for the elections to be held in February. Masked attackers shot him in the head. Hadi was admitted to a hospital in Singapore in a critical condition, where he was treated for six days. After this he died.
Environment of violence and instability in Bangladesh
After the assassination of Hadi, a period of instability has started in Bangladesh. Since his death, incidents of violence have increased across the country, with attacks on major newspapers and cultural institutions. This violence has raised concerns about Bangladesh’s democratic transition. Tight security arrangements were made for Hadi’s funeral on Saturday, although the administration said that peace prevailed and there were no incidents of any new violence.
Hadi’s funeral at Dhaka University campus
Hadi’s funeral procession was held near the mausoleum of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam located on the Dhaka University campus, a symbolic and rare honour. Hadi was buried here for the last rites.
Yunus took this resolution
Addressing the people present at the condolence meeting, Yunus said, “Today we stand united and promise that we will fulfill your ideals.” Praising Hadi’s political thinking, he said that Hadi set an example of doing politics with humility and dignity. Yunus also said that Hadi’s legacy will live on and he will try to take the political culture of Bangladesh to greater heights.
A new parliament election is to be held in Bangladesh on 12 February next year. Many people consider this election an important opportunity to bring Bangladesh out of political turmoil and move it towards a stable and prosperous future.
