US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Sunday (December 21) that the US military has captured another oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela on Saturday. He wrote on social media platform On December 10, the US Army also seized an oil tanker near the Venezuelan coast.
What did the Venezuelan government say?
According to Xinhua news agency, the Venezuelan government strongly condemned this move and called it open plunder and international piracy. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he has ordered a complete blockade of all US-sanctioned oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela. He also said later in an interview that the United States would continue to seize additional oil tankers.
Trump wrote in a long post on social media that Venezuela has been surrounded by the largest naval siege in the history of South America. He said that this siege will increase further and unless they return America’s oil, land and other assets, they will face a blow like they have never seen before.
Trump threatened Maduro government
In his message, Trump announced a complete blockade of all banned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela and demanded the return of oil and other assets. In response, the Venezuelan government has called Trump’s statement a reckless and serious threat. The government says that this is a violation of international law, free trade and freedom of maritime navigation.
“The President of the United States, in a completely irrational manner, seeks to impose a so-called naval military blockade on Venezuela in order to expropriate property that belongs to the Venezuelan people,” the Venezuelan government said in a statement.
