India Advisory For Bangladesh: Big decision of Indian Government regarding Bangladesh, families of diplomats advised to return immediately

In view of the current security situation in Bangladesh, India on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) decided to recall the families of Indian officers posted there. India has taken this step a few weeks before the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. Official sources said, “As a precautionary measure, in view of the security situation, we have advised the dependents of our officials posted at the High Commission and other posts to return to India.” He said that the missions (High Commission) in Bangladesh are open and personnel are working at all the posts.

Apart from the High Commission located in Dhaka, Indian diplomats are also working in Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet. It is not yet known when the families of diplomats and other officials will return to India. It is reported that India has decided to make Bangladesh a “non-family” destination for Indian diplomats and officials due to security concerns in the wake of increasing activities of extremist elements in Bangladesh. Neighboring Pakistan is also a ‘non-family’ destination for Indian diplomats and officials.

Fall of Sheikh Hasina government

Relations between India and Bangladesh became tense when the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government came to power following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. India has been expressing concern over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. Just last month, a person named Dipu Chandra Das was killed by the mob on false charges of blasphemy. After this, his body was hanged at the middle of the intersection and burnt. After this case, a situation of further tension has arisen in the relations between the two countries.
