The uproar in Bangladesh is becoming a cause of concern for India too. There is anger across India including West Bengal over the mob lynching of a Hindu youth. Visa services have been suspended indefinitely after a small group of protesters gathered near the High Commission in New Delhi on Monday (22 December). India has summoned the ambassador of Bangladesh. Strong objection has been expressed regarding the attacks on minorities and diplomatic missions.
Its impact is also clearly visible on the streets of Kolkata, where massive protests took place outside the Bangladesh High Commission. These demonstrations were sparked by anger over the lynching and burning of a Hindu man in Mymensingh and the growing threat of Islamist mob violence. At the root of this turmoil is a horrific series of events.
Apart from all this, there have been attacks on media institutions. Journalists remained trapped in burning buildings. Minorities have taken to the streets demanding protection and political platforms that once supported the interim government are now threatening to topple it.
Visa services suspended
Bangladesh has also suspended visa services at the High Commission in New Delhi, Tripura and embassies in Siliguri, citing security concerns following protests near diplomatic complexes. India retaliated by summoning Bangladesh’s ambassador and expressing strong objection to the attacks on minorities.
Anger on the streets of Kolkata
Protestors held a massive protest outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Kolkata, condemning the lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The protesting leaders also warned of agitation, which reflects the deep anger of the people in India.
Factory officials also included among those arrested
At least 12 people have been arrested so far in the murder case of Dipu Chandra Das, including factory supervisors and colleagues. Investigators say that instead of handing over to the police, Deepu was forced to resign and was thrown out of the factory. Law enforcement officials say this delay cost him his life.
