Tamil Nadu: ‘Adverse effect on women’s fertility’, people protest against cellphone towers

Tamil Nadu News: More than 50 activists of Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVEK) protested against the installation of a new cellphone tower at Panaiyapuram village near Vikravandi in Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu. The workers staged a protest at the site where the tower would be installed and demanded stoppage of work.

There is already a cellphone tower of Airtel company in Panaiyapuram village. The administration had started work to establish a second tower in the same area. Locals claimed to be facing health problems due to the installation of the new tower and had already filed a petition in the district collector’s office.

Due to lack of attention to public complaints. The workers started protesting. The workers, led by South-West District Secretary Vadivel, reached the tower installation site and demanded to stop the work.

Accused of impacting women and birds

The protesters alleged that the already installed tower was affecting the fertility of women and harming bird species. Their fear was that the construction of the new tower would further increase this loss.

On receiving information about the incident, Vikrawandi police immediately reached the spot. The police talked to the activists peacefully and explained to them that if they wanted to stop the tower permanently, they should approach the District Collector and file a proper petition.
