Itanagar Police has arrested two people from Jammu and Kashmir for carrying out espionage activities in Arunachal Pradesh. IG (Law and Order) Chukhu Apa said on Tuesday (23 December 2025) that both the men were arrested from Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on December 18 and have been brought to the state, where they are currently in police custody.
The arrested people have been identified as Ajaz Ahmed Bhat and Bashir Ahmed Ganai. The IG said that another person detained earlier from Miao in Changlang district has been released as investigators did not find any concrete evidence to show his involvement in espionage activities.
Pakistan used to send information related to Arunachal
According to the police officer, the accused were allegedly collecting sensitive information from different parts of Arunachal Pradesh and sharing it with their handlers based in Pakistan. The case first came to light on November 21, when police arrested Nazir Ahmed Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, residents of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir, based on specific intelligence regarding their suspected involvement in espionage activities.
These spies were arrested from Arunachal
Nazir Malik was first detained from Ganga village in Itanagar and based on information received from him, Mir was arrested from Abotani Colony in the state capital later the same day. West Siang police had arrested a person named Hilal Ahmed of Kupwara district from a shop in the district headquarters town Aalo. Changlang police had also arrested a person named Ghulam Mohammad Mir from Miao, who was later released by the police.
The Inspector General of Police said that most of the arrested people were blanket sellers, who roamed around in different parts of the state to collect information. He said, ‘We acted on the basis of credible information about an espionage gang operating from Arunachal Pradesh. The team worked hard under the leadership of Itanagar Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar and made these arrests. Two people have been arrested from Kupwara and three from different places in Itanagar capital region.
Do not allow people to stay in the house without verification: Police
Regarding the possibility of further arrests, the Inspector General of Police said that the interrogation of the accused is ongoing and the forensic investigation report is awaited. He said, ‘We will take further action based on the evidence in the coming days. Most of the arrested people are blanket sellers, who used to go to different parts of the state to collect information.
Verification Expressing concern over the laxity in the police, the police officer urged the citizens to remain alert. He said, ‘I appeal to the people of Arunachal Pradesh to get police verification done for security reasons before allowing anyone to stay on their property. Correct Verification Don’t let anyone stay in your house without it.
