Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) has given a big statement regarding the values of Sanatan Dharma in the country and the role of the government towards it. He said that the government which fails to uphold the values of Sanatan Dharma will never come back to power.
In fact, while addressing a gathering of Swaminarayan sect in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, Amit Shah said that the followers of various Sanatan traditions waited for a long time after the independence of the country in the hope that they would get a government which would give due importance to Sanatan Dharma and rule according to its principles. He said, ‘I have full faith that with the blessings of the saints, no government that disappoints the followers of Sanatan Dharma will ever come to power in this country again.’
Amit Shah said on completion of 200 years of Shikshapatri
This event was organized to commemorate the completion of 200 years of Shikshapatri, the sacred code of conduct consisting of 212 Sanskrit verses written by Lord Swaminarayan in 1826. It serves as a fundamental guide for followers of the Swaminarayan sect, outlining moral, social and spiritual principles including non-violence, purity, diet and daily duties. Shah said that Gujarat’s son Narendra Modi has been leading the country for the last 11 years. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the temple of Lord Ram, which was destroyed more than 550 years ago, has been rebuilt, fulfilling the wish of the people who have been waiting for this moment for centuries.
The Union Home Minister said that various decisions taken by the Modi government in the last 11 years show its commitment towards the cultural and spiritual heritage of India. He said, ‘Article 370 was removed and triple talaq was abolished. In these 11 years, work has been done on Yoga, Ayurveda, cow conservation and renovation of major pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Kashi Vishwanath and now Somnath.
Swaminarayan traveled all over India before settling in Gujarat- Shah
He praised the contribution of Lord Swaminarayan to Gujarat and Indian society, saying that he was a guiding force during the British period. Gandhinagar MP Amit Shah said, ‘Lord Swaminarayan traveled across India on foot before settling in Gujarat. At a time when society was plagued with many vices and addictions, he worked to organize and improve the community.’
Highlighting the importance of Shikshapatri written by Lord Swaminarayan, Shah said that it contains the essence of major Hindu scriptures. He said, ‘It is like a moral constitution for life. It provides practical guidance on self-discipline, social conduct, compassion, non-violence and sense of duty.’
Importance of Shikshapatri still relevant today- Shah
Shah said this lesson is relevant even today, as it advises people to maintain transparency in financial transactions and personal conduct to avoid disputes. Lord Swaminarayan strongly recommended social reforms by encouraging girls’ education, opposing animal sacrifice and campaigning against casteism and untouchability.
He said that the Swaminarayan sect has been working towards protecting Sanatan values and upliftment of the society since its inception. The welfare of all is the essence of Shikshapatri. Lord Swaminarayan gave the message of India’s ancient cultural consciousness and instilled discipline among the people.
