Energy cooperation between India and Canada took a new direction on the occasion of India Energy Week 2026 (IEW’26). On the invitation of Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, Canadian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Timothy Hodgson participated in the India Energy Week 2026 held in Goa. This marked the first high-level participation by a Canadian cabinet minister in the IEW.
On the sidelines of the program, a bilateral meeting was held between the two ministers, in which the renewed version of the India-Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue was formally launched. During this, both sides described energy security and diversity of supply as extremely important for the security, public welfare and economic strength of both the countries.
Meeting held as part of Prime Ministers’ talks at Canada G7 Summit
The meeting took place in continuation of the talks between the Prime Ministers of India and Canada on the sidelines of the G7 Summit held in Kananaskis, Canada in June 2025, in which it was agreed to restart senior ministerial and working level dialogue.
India and Canada acknowledged that both can benefit from cooperation
The ministries of both the countries recognized that the energy sectors of India and Canada complement each other and long-term cooperation can provide mutual benefits to both. While Canada aims to become an energy superpower in both clean and conventional energy sectors, India is emerging as the focal point of the global energy landscape. Canada has emerging LNG projects, is expanding crude oil exports to Asian markets and is also ramping up LPG exports from the West Coast.
India is making efforts towards increasing its share in natural gas
At the same time, India is the world’s third largest oil consumer, fourth largest LNG importer, third largest LPG consumer and the country with the fourth largest refining capacity. It is estimated that India will contribute more than one-third of the growth in global energy demand in the coming two decades. Along with this, India is making continuous efforts towards increasing domestic oil production, expanding refining capacity and increasing the share of natural gas in the energy mix. In such a situation, there is wide scope for a strong partnership in the field of energy and fuel between the two countries.
In this context, the Ministers agreed to increase the supply of LNG, LPG and crude oil from Canada to India and the export of refined petroleum products from India to Canada. Both sides also underlined the importance of joint commercial and investment partnerships in the energy sector.

The Government of Canada had announced energy and resource investments of more than US$116 billion by 2025 by launching the Major Projects Office. At the same time, India also highlighted investment opportunities worth about US $ 500 billion in the entire value chain of the energy sector. Both countries reiterated their resolve to promote mutual investment through long-term partnership.
Expressed commitment on climate change and emissions reduction goals
Both ministers also expressed joint commitment regarding the goals of climate change and emission reduction. It emphasized the development and deployment of clean energy technologies along with technologies such as carbon capture, utilization and storage. Wide scope for cooperation was highlighted in areas such as renewable energy, hydrogen, biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, battery storage, critical minerals, clean technology, power system, energy supply chain strengthening and use of Artificial Intelligence in the energy sector.
Both countries reiterated the importance of energy security and diverse supply chains
The two sides also noted efforts to advance the global energy transition through the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), in which Canada joins as an observer.
At the end of the meeting, India and Canada reiterated their commitment to advance climate goals through government-to-government dialogue, expert-level cooperation, trade partnerships and multilateral fora, reiterating the importance of energy security and diverse supply chains. This partnership is being considered an important step towards a secure, sustainable and reliable energy future not only for both the countries but also for the global community.
