United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the world’s major problems will not be solved by imposing decisions of any one country or by dividing the world into groups of powers. His statements point towards the role of America and China. Guterres said this while talking to journalists on the beginning of the last year of his tenure, i.e. the tenth year.
One country or two countries cannot decide the world
Guterres clearly said that neither one country can take decisions for the entire world nor can two big powers divide the world into their respective areas of influence. He said that if the world is to be made stable, peaceful and developing then participation of many countries is necessary. He described this as support for a “multipolar world”.
Concern over the growing gap between America and China
Guterres said that today the thinking is increasing in the world that the future will depend on two poles – one America and the other China. But this thinking can be dangerous. He said that for peace and development it is necessary to take all countries together.
Role of the United Nations and Security Council reform
Guterres said that the main responsibility for international peace and security rests with the United Nations and its Security Council. He stressed that reform of the Security Council is extremely important. He said that the countries which call the United Nations weak, also oppose its reform, that is why many times the United Nations is not able to work as expected.
