Proponents believe that this can make AI processing more affordable and energy-efficient.

However, experts warn that this path is not easy. Challenges like the risk of collision with space debris, protecting the hardware from cosmic radiation, limited repair possibilities and launch costs still remain major hurdles. According to some analysts, small-scale testing can begin by 2027-28, while larger networks are possible only after 2030.

Why is Elon Musk insisting on this plan?

SpaceX is counted among the most successful rocket companies in the world and has already launched thousands of satellites through Starlink. If AI computing goes to space in the future, then SpaceX is in the best position for it.

Elon Musk believes that space will prove to be the lowest cost location for a solar-powered data center. Recently he had said that in the coming two-three years, space will become the cheapest option for AI. According to reports, a part of the proceeds from SpaceX’s possible IPO can be invested in the development of these AI data center satellites.

Musk is not alone in this race

Apart from Elon Musk, many big companies are also working on AI infrastructure in space. Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin has been researching the technology of huge data centers in orbit for a long time. Bezos believes that with uninterrupted solar energy, space-based data centers can be cheaper than those on Earth.

Nvidia-backed Starcloud recently launched its Starcloud-1 satellite which is equipped with the most powerful AI chip ever, the H100. This satellite is working on Google’s open-source AI model to prove the feasibility of this idea.

Google is also working on a plan to create an orbital AI cloud by connecting solar-powered satellites under Project Suncatcher. At the same time, China has announced to create a space cloud in the next five years, which will include gigawatt-level AI infrastructure.

Is the future of AI really in space?

At present, this technology is in the experimental stage, but it is clear that the increasing appetite for AI has forced companies to think outside the box. If the technical and economic challenges are solved, space could become a new arena for AI data centers in the coming decade.
