Cyber Fraud: Such a cyber fraud happened with a 59 year old man living in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad which shocked everyone. Relying on a simple delivery message caused him a loss of Rs 2.49 lakh. This case shows how cyber thugs are committing big fraud on people on the pretext of small amount of money.
Waiting for courier and opportunity for swindlers
According to the police, the victims were waiting for a parcel from DHL for the last two days and were also following up on the delivery. On December 2, around 11:30 am, a message came on his mobile from an unknown number. It was written that two delivery attempts had failed and a fee of Rs 25 would have to be paid for re-delivery. A link was also given in the message.
As soon as trust opens the way for fraud
This message seemed completely genuine to the person waiting for the parcel. He clicked on the link without thinking much. After this he reached a website which looked completely trustworthy. There he was asked for credit card information. After some time, an OTP came on his phone which he understood to be related to the payment of Rs 25.
2.49 lakh rupees were lost as soon as OTP was entered
As soon as he entered the OTP, a huge amount of Rs 2.49 lakh was deducted from his credit card. Only then did he realize that something had gone wrong. He immediately contacted his bank and later lodged a complaint with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police Station.
How does Delivery OTP Scam work?
Police officials say that this is a classic example of OTP based delivery scam. Fraudsters target those people who are already waiting for a parcel. They reduce suspicion by asking for very small amounts like Rs 20 or 25. As soon as the victim shares card details and OTP, the fraudsters approve large transactions within seconds.
Police warning and important advice
Hyderabad Police has warned people to be cautious of any SMS or WhatsApp message in which money is demanded in the name of delivery failure or repeat delivery. Police clearly say that renowned courier companies do not ask for payment for such charges through unknown links.
Vigilance is the best protection
Police have advised people not to click on unknown links, not to enter debit or credit card information on any suspicious website and not to share OTP, CVV or PIN with anyone. If there is any suspicion of fraud, immediately contact the bank and cyber crime helpline because if timely action is taken, many times the transaction can be stopped or even reversed.
