Over 260 people were killed, nearly 1,500 injured and over 70,000 displaced after caste violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Manipur BJP said, under the experienced and visionary leadership of Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Manipur is ready to move forward on the path of peace, development and good governance, which will usher in a new era of stability and progress for the state.
The BJP central leadership held several rounds of meetings with its Meitei and Kuki MLAs, allies NPF and NPP and some independent MLAs over the past several months to ascertain whether the political situation was conducive for government formation.
