A decade-old personal rivalry took a horrifying form on Monday (February 2, 2026) evening in a quiet village in Belagavi district of Karnataka, where 49-year-old Basappa Hosmani was brutally murdered with a machete (sharp weapon). The accused in this sensational murder of Belagavi is none other than 32-year-old Irayya Sangayya Mathapati, who has been arrested by the Belagavi Police.
According to the police, this sensational incident took place on Monday evening (February 2, 2026) in Hulikatti village of Savadatti taluk, but the story of this bloodshed is not of today, rather its roots are about 10 years old.
What was revealed in the police investigation?
Police investigation has revealed that about a decade ago, Basappa Hosmani had allegedly gone to Kolhapur in Maharashtra with the mother of the accused. At that time the age of the accused was only 18 years. This incident sat in his mind like poison. Recently, Hosmani had returned to the village after leaving the woman in Kolhapur. Police believe that this return proved to be his last.
Hosmani died on the spot due to machete attack
Accused Irayya Mathapati, who had been suppressing this insult and anger for years, as soon as he saw the opportunity, attacked Hosmani with a machete. Hosmani suffered several fatal injuries in the attack and died on the spot.
The accused himself informed the police after committing the murder.
The most shocking thing is that after the murder, the accused himself informed the police and remained standing at the spot. By placing his feet on the dead body, it seemed as if he had no regrets for his actions. At present, a case has been registered in the Savadatti police station and further investigation is going on.
