A few days ago, Australia had banned children from using social media. Now Spain is also preparing to make such a law. The government here is considering banning social media platforms for children below 16 years of age. Also, the government wants that top executives of companies should be held accountable for illegal and hateful content coming on the platforms. There is talk of making a provision for this also in the law.
What is the reason for this?
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, speaking at the World Government Summit, said that children have been left in a digital space, which was not created for them. Terming today’s Internet as a digital Wild West, he said that the government cannot ignore it. Sanchez said that this problem is not bound by any border and the whole of Europe will have to work together. Spain now wants to join other European countries to tighten regulation on social media platforms.
Bill may come next week
The Spanish government may bring a bill for this law next week. In this proposed law, along with banning social media for children, there will also be a provision to hold senior executives of companies responsible for hateful content on the platforms. Also, algorithm manipulation and promoting harmful content will be considered a criminal act. After the implementation of the law, social media platforms will have to introduce a system of user age-verification. The people here are also in support of this law. About 80 percent of the people involved in a survey said that children below 14 years of age should be banned from social media.
Law came in France also
In France too, preparations are underway to ban social media for children. The National Assembly here has approved the bill to ban social media for children below 15 years of age. After this law is made, like Australia, here too children will not be able to use social media platforms.
