In view of the increasing AI generated and deepfake content on social media, the Indian government has tightened the rules. Now social media platforms will have to delete objectionable material within three hours and it has also been made mandatory for them to label AI-generated content. Besides, the user will also have to declare that his content has been created or altered with the help of AI tools.

New rules will come into effect from February 20

The new rules were notified on 10 February and will come into effect from 20 February. These rules are being implemented at a time when the use of deepfakes, false information and synthetic media in fraud, harassment and other illegal activities is increasing.

What will change after the new rules come?

Labeling- The biggest change in the rules has been to make labeling mandatory. The government has given clear instructions to social media platforms and other digital intermediaries that there should be clearly visible labels on AI generated and edited content. This label cannot be removed or tampered with. Also, platforms will have to provide unique identifiers in the content, so that synthetic content can be traced.

User Declaration- Social media platforms will have to take information from the user at the time of upload whether its content is generated or edited by AI. Besides, they will also have to deploy tools to verify user declarations.

Timeline for content moderation- Earlier, social media platforms were given 36 hours to remove any objectionable content, but now in some cases this timeline has been reduced. Now these platforms will have to delete objectionable content within three hours of legal order or user complaint.

There was a change in this rule also

It has been made clear in the new rules that if AI generated content is used in illegal activities then it will also be treated like other illegal content. Platforms will have to ensure that their services are not used for any illegal activities.
