At the Global Cyberpeace Summit 2026, Rajesh Kumar, CEO of the Indian Cyber ​​​​Crime Coordination Center (I4C), said that extensive use of AI and automation has been seen in the cyber attacks recorded during 2024–2025. I4C, working under the Ministry of Home Affairs, provides a coordinated framework to the agencies of the country to deal with cyber crime.
Criminal gangs working in corporate style
Now cyber criminals are not working like small gangs, but in an organized structure like companies. Operating from South-East Asia, Africa, the Middle East and parts of India, these networks are divided into different departments.
These gangs have recruitment teams, people who look after salaries and promotions, and even research and development units. These teams discover the shortcomings of technology and the weaknesses of human behavior and take advantage of them.
Big role of AI in social engineering
Although many cyber attacks are still based on social engineering, they are now getting tremendous support from AI. Fake SMS and WhatsApp messages are being created through automatic scripting and personalization, making them appear extremely genuine and trustworthy. With the help of AI, criminals can target thousands of people simultaneously, due to which the scope of fraud has increased manifold.
The rising global cost of cyber crime
According to the report, the world was expected to suffer a loss of around $10.8 trillion due to cyber crime in 2025, which could reach around $12 trillion this year. Many international think tanks claim that now about 80 percent of cyber attacks have some form of AI role.
New tactics like deepfake and digital arrest
AI is now being used in deepfake technology also. In cases like digital arrest, criminals scare the victim by showing the face and voice of a famous police officer in a fake manner, which makes him think that he is talking to a real officer.
Triple Extortion and the Threat of Crime-as-a-Service
Now triple extortion model has also come to the fore in cyber crime. In this, first the data is locked with ransomware and then money is extorted by threatening to leak it. Apart from this, the trend of Crime-as-a-Service is also increasing rapidly. In this, organized gangs facilitate crime even to those people who do not have technical knowledge. That is, pay money and get ready cyber crime service.
According to experts, even many senior government officials have become victims of fraud in such cases. It is clear that AI has made cyber crime more organized, faster and dangerous than ever before.
