Counting of votes continues after the 13th parliamentary elections held on Thursday (12 February) in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tariq Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, seems to be winning a landslide victory.
News agency Reuters quoted a local TV as saying that BNP has won 212 seats in the 300-member Parliament, while its candidates are leading in many other seats. BNP leaders seem elated with this historic victory.
What did Tariq Rehman’s advisor say?
BNP President Tariq Rehman seems very happy with this bumper victory of the party. His advisor Syed Moazzam Hossain Alal said on his party’s landslide victory that after a long time, almost one and a half decade, the Bangladeshi people got a chance to cast their vote and it was a historic election conducted with the cooperation of the Election Commission, the interim government and political parties.
Syed Moazzam Hussain Alal said that the people of Bangladesh are very happy to express their choice and the result is also the same. Bangladesh Nationalist Party has got absolute majority. Jamaat-e-Islami has also got a good number of seats. He told that the swearing in ceremony will probably be held tomorrow i.e. on 14th February.
In the general elections held on Thursday in Bangladesh, voters voted for 299 seats, for which the majority figure is 150. Voting was canceled in Sherpur-3 constituency due to the death of a candidate. 50 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad are reserved for women and their election is based on the representation of parties in the 300 general seats.
Awami League banned in Bangladesh elections
This is the first general election being held in Bangladesh in which Awami League and its chief Sheikh Hasina are not participating and she is in India. Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia who died in December last year. He maintained his dominance over the country’s politics for decades and now his son Tariq Rehman is the frontrunner in the race for the post of Prime Minister.
