This feature is very useful in saving lives of people in remote areas. Now reports are saying that this feature is being made more advanced in the iPhone 18 series, after which messages can be sent and received from anywhere in the world. How does this feature work now?
The Emergency SOS feature works through satellite connectivity. That means you can message emergency services or your contacts with the help of satellite even without mobile network. However, it can only be used to send simple messages or receive texts like turn left and turn right to get directions etc. Now Apple is working on increasing its functionality.
NR-NTN functionality will be added to the feature
According to media reports, Apple will use A20 silicon with C2 modem in its upcoming series, which will come with NR-NTN functionality support. The full name of NR-NTN is New Radio Non-Terrestrial Network and it provides internet connectivity with the help of satellites in low-earth orbit. If you understand in simple language, due to the new hardware in iPhone 18, you will be able to use internet in any part of the world. Whether you are skiing on a snowy mountain or scuba diving in the blue sea, there will be internet connectivity on your iPhone everywhere.
Is such a feature coming in a phone for the first time?
Satellite internet in phones is not a new idea. Many Chinese companies are offering this feature in their smartphones. In China, Huawei was the first to provide this feature in its Mate 60 Pro, with the help of which people can share messages, calls and images through China’s Tiantong satellite system even without mobile network.
