High voltage drama on the highway, Congress MP and BRS leader clash in Jangaon before Thorur elections, scuffle

A very fierce face of politics has come to the fore in Telangana today (16 February) amid the elections for the posts of Municipal Corporation President and Mayor. At around 9:30 am on Monday, the situation at Pembarti bypass in Jangaon district became like an ‘action film’ when Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy and his supporters stopped the bus carrying BRS councilors of Thorur Municipality in the middle of the road. During this, there was a fierce scuffle and argument between former minister Erraballi Dayakar Rao and Congress supporters, due to which there was tension on the National Highway for hours.

what is the whole matter
This incident took place when the elected BRS councilor of Thorur Municipality was going to attend the swearing-in ceremony. It is alleged that MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy along with his followers blocked the path of the bus and prohibited the councilors from moving forward. BRS leaders have termed it as ‘blatant abuse of power’ and ‘hooliganism’.

Former minister Erraballi Dayakar Rao lodged a strong protest on the spot, after which workers of both the parties clashed with each other. The police had to work hard to control the situation and finally the councilors’ bus was sent to Thorur under police protection.

Fear of ‘camp politics’ and horse-trading of councilors
The root of this entire controversy is the results of Telangana municipal elections. In municipalities like Thorur and Jangaon, no party has got a clear majority, due to which the fear of ‘camp politics’ and horse-trading of councilors is at its peak. There is a close contest between BRS and Congress in Thorur and every vote is important to decide the post of President. For the last few days, both the parties had kept their councilors at secret places and today on the day of voting they were being brought directly to the centre.

Local body elections in Telangana have always been a battle of prestige. After the victory in the recent assembly elections, Congress wants to strengthen its hold, while BRS is trying to save its lost support base.
