Why is this issue arising?
The objective of Modi government is to provide a safe environment to children and minors in the online world. In recent times, the time spent by children and teenagers on social media has increased significantly. Due to easy availability of mobile phones and internet, children are easily getting connected to digital platforms at a very young age.

What has happened in other countries so far?
In such a situation, Modi government and experts are worried that children may be affected by wrong content, cyber bullying and online addiction. For this reason, consideration is being given to making rules regarding the use of social media according to age. In many countries of the world, steps have already been taken regarding the online safety of children. In countries like Australia and France, rules for minors on social media platforms have been made strict and responsibilities of companies have been fixed. Looking at the experiences of these countries, India is also exploring options to make digital platforms safer for children.

‘A new guideline or policy can be brought’
The Modi government at the Center says that currently talks are going on with social media companies and opinions of all parties are being taken regarding age-based restrictions.
