Before the assembly elections to be held in Assam this year, former Congress President Bhupen Bora resigned from the party. Regarding his joining BJP, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi said that it will not have any impact on the electoral prospects. Gaurav Gogoi said that Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Jinnah of Assam. Assam CM had earlier said that Bhupen Bora will join BJP on February 22.
What did Gaurav Gogoi say about Bhupen Bora?
Gaurav Gogoi said on Wednesday (18 February 2026) that people joining the ruling BJP have become insignificant in their political journey and Bhupen Bora will also be in the same situation. He said, ‘We can see the example of Sarbananda Sonowal and many others. AGP party (Sonowal’s previous party) is on the verge of extinction. In the upcoming assembly elections, the contest will be between the real Congress and the old Congress.
‘Himanta Biswa Sarma should stop distributing Hindu certificates’
He further said that BJP is full of old Congress leaders, who were the most corrupt during the 15-year rule of Congress in the state. On Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma calling Bora the last Hindu leader of Congress, Gogoi alleged that he (Himanta Biswa Sarma) is the Jinnah of Assam and he should stop giving Hindu certificate to the leaders. Congress is like an ocean and we all are just drops of water in it. Congress has existed long before the existence of our ancestors.
Bhupen Bora angry at Rahul Gandhi
Bhupen Bora claimed on Wednesday that Assam Congress is no longer under the control of Gaurav Gogoi, but Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain is the main architect of the party. Bora said that after he sent his resignation letter to the Congress high command on Monday, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi called him. Bhupen Bora claimed, ‘He (Rahul Gandhi) mentioned how together we took the party forward, which is true, but he did not say a word about my resignation.’
Congress doesn’t need me: Bhupen Bora
He said, ‘I realized that I was not needed in the party, so I resigned. Congress state in-charge Jitendra Singh had held a meeting with six party leaders on February 9 and was given the responsibility of taking forward the talks of the opposition alliance before the assembly elections. I accepted that because it was the party’s decision and I also felt that the alliance was necessary because Congress cannot face BJP alone.
What did Bhupen Bora say about Assam Congress?
Bhupen Bora said, ‘I felt that there is a need to unite the anti-BJP vote, which will ensure a good contest in the assembly elections. The next day I got a call from Gaurav Gogoi, who said that you are not alone, but Rakibul Hussain will be with you in taking the alliance talks forward. Bora claimed, ‘I told him that this was not the decision that was taken in the meeting. Although, being an MP, he can stay there, but Gaurav stressed that he should be actively involved in it.
