The Supreme Court has refused to hear the petition opposing the construction of a mosque in the name of Babar. The petitioner said that Babar was a foreign invader. A mosque should not be built in his name, but the Supreme Court rejected the petition.
The petitioner named Devkinandan Pandey had informed the court about the construction of a building in the name of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, West Bengal. The petitioner, resident of Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, had called it an attempt to disturb communal harmony. The petitioner had demanded to ban the construction of such buildings across the country.
Along with the Central Government, all the states and union territories were made parties in the petition. The petitioner had mainly made 2 demands:-
- The Supreme Court should order all the states not to allow any mosque or religious building to be built in the name of Babar, Babri or any other name based on it, nor to allow any existing building to be named like this.
- All states should be asked to issue such guidelines, advisories or administrative orders which prohibit the construction of mosques or religious buildings in the name of Babar or any other foreign invader.
On Friday (February 20, 2026), the case came up for hearing in the bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta. The petitioner’s lawyer said that Babar was a foreign invader. He used to call Hindus slaves. Action should be taken against those who want to honor his name, but the court refused to hear the case.
