Facebook Messenger: Taking a big decision, Meta has announced the closure of Messenger’s independent website. After April 2026, users will not be able to chat through messenger.com. According to the company’s help page update, all conversations happening on the web will now happen directly through Facebook’s platform.
Web users will shift directly to Facebook
After April 2026, if someone opens messenger.com, it will be automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages. That means, to continue chatting on desktop, you will have to use Facebook’s web interface. However, for mobile users, the Messenger app will continue to work as before.
People who have deactivated their Facebook account but used the web version of Messenger will have their options limited. Such users will now be able to continue conversations only through the mobile app. Backup can be restored using the PIN created to keep the chat history safe and in case the PIN is forgotten, the option to reset it will also be available.
Desktop apps have been closed before too
This move is not sudden. Earlier, the company has also discontinued separate Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac. Even at that time, desktop users were redirected towards Facebook’s web interface. This indicated that Messenger’s independent website may also be closed in the future.
The information about this change was first shared by tech reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. Now the company is informing users about this through pop-up notifications on the website and app.
Strategy to bring messaging services on one platform
Messenger started in 2008 as Facebook Chat. In 2011, it was introduced as a separate app and in 2014, messaging features were removed from the main Facebook app and users were encouraged to adopt a separate Messenger app.
But the strategy seemed to be changing in recent years. From 2023, Facebook started adding Messenger features back to its main app. Now the decision to close the website is being considered as part of this broader strategy under which the company wants to integrate its messaging system.
However, many users have expressed displeasure over this change, especially those who have closed Facebook accounts but used to use Messenger Web. For them, this step may feel like an inconvenience rather than a convenience.
