Preparations are underway to ban social media for children in Karnataka. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sought advice from the Vice Chancellors of the state’s universities whether social media and phones should be banned for children below 16 years of age. In a program, the Chief Minister said that the use of digital devices is increasing and it is affecting the learning abilities of children as well as their behavior patterns and mental health.

Considering the dangers of social media, there is a discussion on banning it for children in the entire country. Recently, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said that the Central Government is discussing with tech companies what safeguards are needed to protect children in the digital world. He said that deepfakes remain a big concern and if there is a consensus in the Parliament, then strict regulatory steps can be taken regarding it.

Apart from Karnataka, such preparations are also going on in Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh government has formed a committee of ministers to study the international model in this direction. Similarly, Goa has also said that like Australia, it can ban social media for children below 16 years of age. Goa government says that it has received many complaints regarding social media addiction among children.
Australia has already banned, many other countries are also preparing
Australia is the first country in the world where social media has been completely banned for children under 16 years of age. Now following Australia’s path, many other countries including France, Spain, Greece and the United Kingdom are also considering bringing such a law.
