No Network in Lift: Often you must have felt that as soon as you step inside the lift, the mobile network suddenly becomes weak or disappears completely. Calls get disconnected, internet stops and messages don’t even go through. This problem is not just about your phone, but there is a scientific reason behind it.
Mobile signals work through radio waves. These waves travel easily in open environments but when thick walls or metal objects come in front of them, the signal becomes weak. The structure of the lift is usually made of iron or steel which prevents the signal from coming inside.
How does Faraday cage become a lift?
You can consider the lift as a kind of Faraday cage. Faraday cage is a structure which prevents external electrical waves from coming inside. Since the lift is completely surrounded by metal, the signal coming from the mobile tower cannot penetrate inside it properly.
Additionally, elevators are often located in the center or interior of a building, where the signal is already weak. When a layer of metal is added to it, the network is almost destroyed.
Is the lift alone responsible?
Not only lifts, but thick concrete walls and basements of high-rise buildings also affect the network. If the building does not have a signal booster or in-building network system, then the problem increases further. Additionally, if many people are using the network in the lift at the same time, the available signal may appear even weaker.
What is its solution?
Although it is difficult to get a completely strong network inside the lift, some measures can help. For better network, it is necessary to have a phone with 4G or 5G support and updated software. Signal boosters are installed in many modern buildings which reduces the problem.
If you are on an important call, it is better to end the conversation before entering the lift. Internet-based calling or Wi-Fi calling feature can also be helpful to some extent, provided Wi-Fi is available in the building.
