Instagram: In a recently revealed legal document, it has been informed that about 19 percent of Instagram users in the age group of 13 to 15 years saw such nude or obscene content which they did not want to see. This fact came to light in documents made public as part of a federal lawsuit being heard in California. These documents also include excerpts from Instagram chief Adam Mosseri’s testimony in March 2025.
company side
During testimony, Mosseri said that the company generally does not make the results of such surveys public. He also admitted that surveys based on information given by users themselves are sometimes not completely accurate.
Instagram’s owner company Meta has already been facing allegations that its platform can have a negative impact on the mental health of the youth. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against the company in America in which it is alleged that its products have been designed in such a way that they keep the youth engaged for a long time.
Where did the data come from?
According to company spokesperson Andy Stone, this figure has not been taken from a direct review of the post but from a survey based on the experiences of users. That is, the teenagers themselves told that they saw objectionable material on the platform.
Meta also announced in late 2025 that it would remove photos and videos containing nudity or explicit sexual activity, even if they were generated by AI. However, some exceptions may be made in medical or educational contexts.
Mental health concerns
The same testimony also revealed that about 8 percent of teen users saw someone harming themselves or threatening to do so on Instagram. This figure raises serious questions on the relationship between social media and mental health.
Mosseri also said that most of the objectionable material is shared through private messages. In such a situation, the company has to strike a balance between monitoring the content and privacy of the users, because many people do not want their private messages to be read.
