Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reached India on Friday. He will remain on official tour till March 2. He landed in Mumbai on Friday. This is Mark Carney’s first visit to India as Prime Minister. Its purpose is to rebuild mutual relations between the two countries. Also to promote trade.
He said that Canada’s aim is to counter the effects of bad relations with America. Besides, relations have to be deepened with countries like India, China and the Middle East.
According to AFP, after reaching Mumbai, the Canadian Prime Minister can first talk to the business leaders of India. After this he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. This meeting between the two leaders can take place on Monday.
Relations between India and Canada have soured
In the last few years, relations between India and Canada had reached a very bad point. Because of this, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had accused India of being involved in the murder of a Canadian citizen. However, Delhi denied these allegations.
According to Reuters, unlike Trudeau, Carney will not go to Punjab. This area is associated with Sikh separatist politics. This is being said to be a big step towards creating coordination between Indian officials.
Experts say that Carney’s approach shows a more practical foreign policy. Recently, there has been tension in America and Canada between the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and the threats of annexation. Business leaders have described the Canadian Prime Minister’s visit as more focused directly on trade and investment rather than on symbolism.
Trade deal can also be discussed with Canada
This visit is taking place after the recent trade agreement between India and EU. In such a situation, such a deal is expected to be discussed with Canada also. According to Reuters, Indian officials had indicated that the talks could include a long-term uranium supply pact and smaller agreements in areas like energy, AI, education and culture.
After India, Carney will also visit Australia and Japan. This is part of a larger effort to reduce its dependence on the US and diversify Canada’s trade and strengthen relations with those countries. Canada has described these countries as middle economic powers.
