The question often arises whether “The Kerala Story” is just an agenda-pushing film or does it highlight real social issues. The film begins with a disclaimer, stating that the story is inspired by some real incidents. After this we are shown the story of three girls, one from Kerala, one from Madhya Pradesh and one from Rajasthan. In such a situation, the question arises that when the story is about different states, then why was the film named “The Kerala Story”, which creates the perception among the viewers of being focused on a specific state.
It is shown in the film that these girls are pressurized for religious conversion and they are treated inhumanely, seeing which the audience can sometimes feel awkward. Finally the makers say that such cases have been reported from different places.
Talking about acting, Aditi Bhatia, Ulka Gupta and Aishwarya Ojha have given very impressive performances in their roles. His acting makes the emotional aspects of the film alive. The story and writing are sharp and impactful, making the audience feel exactly what the makers want to show. The writing of Vipul Shah and Amarnath Jha is strong, while the direction of Kamakhya Narayan Singh is excellent at many places, although there is some weakness in some parts.
The film tries to keep its message clearly and brings forward social issues. For example, one of the film’s storylines is said to be inspired by the real case of National Shooter Tara Shahdeo. This forces the audience to think that the film is not just entertainment but also gives some social message.
Ultimately, it depends on the viewers whether they see it from the perspective of agenda or propaganda or as a film based on social issues. To give rating or not is a personal choice, but it is in the hands of the viewers to decide how they see this film as cinema, message or propaganda.
