Strong tremors were felt in China’s Xinjiang province on Thursday morning. According to China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the earthquake occurred at 5:45 am 44 seconds. Its intensity was recorded at 4.9 on the Richter scale and the center was located at a depth of 10 kilometers from the ground. The epicenter of the earthquake was at 43.55 degrees north latitude and 86.12 degrees east longitude. According to local media reports, the tremors spread panic among the people and many people came out of their homes.
Instructions to increase earthquake monitoring
The China Earthquake Administration (CEA) implemented Level-3 emergency response immediately after the earthquake. Under this protocol, instructions have been given to the concerned agencies to conduct joint review, increase earthquake monitoring, assess possible aftershocks and rapidly share all important information. The Xinjiang Provincial Earthquake Administration has sent an expert team to the site to monitor the situation and assist the local government. The team is cooperating in relief and emergency works.
‘No confirmation of major loss’
No major damage has been confirmed so far due to the earthquake in Xinjiang, but officials are continuously collecting information from the affected areas. The communication and power supply systems in the earthquake affected areas are being investigated. Experts say that considering the intensity and shallow depth of the tremors, there may be a possibility of minor damage. The administration has appealed to the people to remain alert and trust the official information.
There was a strong earthquake in Tibet in January 2025. Its intensity was measured according to 6.8 Chinese agencies. At least 126 people lost their lives in this earthquake. More than 1000 houses were damaged. In December 2023, an earthquake of about 5.9-6.2 magnitude occurred in Gansu province of China, whose depth was about 10 kilometers.
