For Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, the 2026 T20 World Cup has been no less than a golden dream. Ishaan scored 317 runs in this World Cup. During this period, 33 fours and 18 sixes came from his bat. Ishan Kishan has played an important role in India winning the T20 World Cup title, but he was nowhere in the scene till a few days before the start of the World Cup. Suddenly he was included in the team for the series against New Zealand. Now Ishaan has opened up big after becoming the champion of India.
“Surya Bhai called me when the team was about to be announced. I also took a screenshot because I thought he had called about the World Cup team. He asked me straight out, ‘Will we win the World Cup?’ I asked him, ‘Will you trust?’ He said ‘yes’ and that was it.”
The night before the final was not easy for Ishan Kishan. He was struggling with a great personal tragedy. Ishaan told that he had come to know about the death of his cousin sister in an accident just a few days ago. This was a news which was coming to his mind again and again before the biggest match of the tournament.
Ishaan said, to be honest, I was not thinking of talking about this before the match but I will say. My cousin sister died in a car accident and I came to know about it a few days ago. She always wanted me to score a lot of runs. Yesterday I wasn’t feeling good, but today was a big day, so instead of putting my emotions above the match, I thought the best thing I could do was score runs for him.
Ishan said that after scoring the half-century, he was relieved that he could do it for his late sister. He said, “When I looked up after scoring the half-century, it was for him. I am very proud that we won today. I feel sad for his family but my close friends are there to take care of them.”
Talking about the atmosphere in the dressing room, Ishan Kishan said, “The World Cup is always a huge stage. There is pressure and nervousness, but here the task is clear, you just have to choose the right shots and keep things simple. When you keep it simple, it becomes easier for the player. The coach and the captain gave everyone freedom and never doubted the players. When you get that support, you yourself want to change the game.”
