‘Go and sell 2-3 more sweaters in Ludhiana’, why did the Supreme Court have to say such a thing to the petitioner?

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (March 10, 2026) rejected the petition of a textile merchant from Ludhiana and asked him to go and sell 2-3 more sweaters. The businessman had prepared the petition with the help of Artificial Intelligence and as soon as the court became suspicious of him, they asked two-three questions to the businessman, to which he could not answer.

The businessman admitted that he had used artificial intelligence in drafting the petition. During this, Chief Justice Surya Kant also asked him about some complex legal terms, which he could not explain.

Chief Justice Surya Kant, while dismissing the PIL, said, ‘Go, sell 2-3 more sweaters in Ludhiana… Those people whose job it is to file such petitions, will cause harm to you by imposing fines.’

CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice R. Mahadevan’s bench became suspicious when Rajneesh Sidhu, a textile businessman who had studied till class 12th, stood up to argue his petition related to ‘PM Care Fund’. As soon as Sidhu started reading the written arguments, CJI Surya Kant asked questions about his education and background.

When the petitioner said that he had not filed any petition before and had come straight to the Supreme Court to file his first petition, CJI Surya Kant sarcastically said, ‘It was a very brave act, coming straight from Ludhiana.’

CJI Surya Kant said, ‘I will test your English here and if you get even 30 percent marks, then I will assume that you have prepared this petition.’ After this the CJI asked about some words used in the PIL, to which Sidhu could not answer. The petitioner also admitted that he used AI tools to prepare the petition.
