The 11th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup will be held in the year 2028. After 2022, Australia will host this tournament for the second time, while this will be the first time for New Zealand to organize Men’s T20 World Cup matches for the first time. Major stadiums and venues for T20 World Cup 2028
The T20 World Cup 2028 will be played on some of the most prestigious cricket grounds of Australia and New Zealand.
Australia – Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Adelaide Oval and Optus Stadium in Perth.
New Zealand – Auckland’s Eden Park, Wellington’s Sky Stadium and Christchurch’s Hagley Oval.
20 teams will participate in T20 World Cup
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has retained the participation of 20 teams, which was started in the year 2024. With the conclusion of the Super-8 stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup, 12 teams have confirmed their places. Being the host countries, the teams of Australia and New Zealand have already confirmed their places, while on the basis of their performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup, the teams of India (defending champions), England, South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have also already qualified.
Teams will qualify on the basis of ranking
The teams of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Ireland have secured their places on the basis of ICC T20 rankings till the cut-off date of March 9, 2026. The fight for the remaining 8 places is still pending. Regional qualification tournaments for these will start from mid-2026. Sub-regional qualifiers will be held in regions such as the Americas (proposed in the Cayman Islands) and Europe, giving associate countries a chance to reach the main stage.
Format and challenges of T20 World Cup 2028
The structure of T20 World Cup 2028 will also be similar to the 2026 tournament.
Group Stage – 20 teams will participate in this tournament and those teams will be divided into four groups of 5 each.
Super-8 – The top 2 teams of each group will reach the Super-8 round.
knock out – The four best teams of Super-8 will compete in the semi-finals and then two finals.
