Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East, a special drone of Iran is in the news. The name of this drone is Karrar UAV. It is a jet-powered multi-purpose drone, which can be used as an interceptor, bomber and suicide drone. Due to its fast speed and firepower, it is being considered a big challenge for America’s military bases deployed in the Gulf region.
According to the report of Army technology, Karrar drone was presented publicly for the first time in 2010. This is considered an important achievement of Iran’s defense industry. This is Iran’s first indigenous jet engine drone and has become an important part of the country’s anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) military strategy. Its speed and maneuverability make it different from conventional propeller drones and makes it a difficult target for enemy radar and air defense systems.
Technical capabilities and features of Karrar drone
There are many technical features of Karrar drone, which make it dangerous in the battlefield. Its range is said to be around 1,000 kilometers. In a one-way or suicide mission its reach could be even greater. Due to the jet turbo engine, it can fly at a speed of about 900 kilometers per hour. It can carry about 250 to 500 kg of weapons or explosives. Weapons like Kausar anti-ship missile and Azarkhash air-to-air missile can be installed in it. It does not need a runway. It is flown from a rail launcher with a rocket booster and can be landed by parachute after the mission is completed.
Why is war considered dangerous?
Karrar drone is a weapon with high lethality at low cost. Its new version is said to be equipped with Majeed missile, through which it can target enemy aircraft or drones in the air itself. Not only this, its fast speed and suicide attack mode make it like a cruise missile in many respects. If it is used in large numbers together i.e. in swarm, it can confuse and weaken the enemy’s air defense system. Amid rising tensions in West Asia and military activities in the Gulf region, drones like Karrar are playing an important role in Iran’s defense strategy. In future wars, such drones can have a huge military impact at low cost.
