26 leaders from 7 states have been elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha elections. These include big names like Sharad Pawar, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Thambi Durai, Vinod Tawde and Babul Supriyo. Tough competition is being seen in Bihar, Odisha and Haryana. Voting is to be held on these seats today, the results will also be known by this evening. Know where the competition is.
Contest between Upendra Kushwaha and AD Singh
In Bihar, apart from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and JDU’s Ramnath Thakur, the victory of BJP President Nitin Nabin and BJP leader Shivam Kumar is almost certain. There is a direct contest on the fifth seat between Upendra Kushwaha of NDA and AD Singh of Grand Alliance, which can be decided only by voting. According to the figures, the grand alliance with 35 MLAs needs the support of 41 MLAs to win.
All 5 AIMIM MLAs have announced their support to Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD. On the other hand, NDA has claimed that their candidate Upendra Kushwaha will be victorious. To win, Kushwaha will need the votes of at least 3 MLAs of the Grand Alliance.
Tough fight in Odisha
Both BJP and BJD are likely to get two seats each in Odisha. BJP state president Manmohan Samal, Sujit Kumar and corporate veteran BJD leader Satrat Mishra will be elected unopposed. Currently two candidates are in the fray for the fourth seat. Odisha, which has 147 members, needs 30 votes to win one Rajya Sabha seat, of which BJP currently has 79 seats and has the support of 3 independent MLAs, taking its total number of seats to 82. Two BJP candidates will win easily, but to make the third candidate win, BJP will have to collect 8 more votes.
31 MLAs of Haryana Congress shift to Himachal
BJP has 48 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly. Apart from 2 INLD MLAs, 3 independent MLAs have also pledged support to BJP, taking the total number of BJP MLAs to 53. To win one seat, 31 votes are required and if the victory of BJP’s official candidate Sanjay Bhatia is ensured, he will get an additional benefit of 22 votes. Congress has 37 seats and with the victory of Karamveer Bodh, it will easily get an additional gain of 6 votes.
However, BJP supported independent candidate Satish Nandal has turned the equation of Rajya Sabha elections upside down by filing his nomination papers. Nandal needs 9 votes to win, which is impossible without cross-voting of Congress MLAs. For this reason, Congress has shifted 31 of its MLAs to Himachal Pradesh.
