Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei has given an important responsibility to 71-year-old Mohsin Rezai, who gave the statement ‘Pakistan will launch a nuclear attack on Israel’ amid the war between America and Israel. Mujtaba has chosen him as his senior military advisor. This information was given by Iran’s government agency Mehr on Monday (March 16).
The former chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Rezai is already known as a hardline military leader in the conservative regime. This matches the thinking of Mujtaba Khamenei. Experts say that his thinking is more right-wing than that of his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei.
Rezai has been appointed at a time when America and Israel have waged war against Iran in the Middle East. Here, Rezai has said that America has maintained insecurity in the Persian Gulf for the last fifty years. Unless America withdraws its forces, and regional countries, especially Iran and Oman, take control of the Strait of Hormuz, it is impossible to ensure security there.
Mohsin Rezai is known for his statements
In a statement issued on March 1, Rezai said that American ships will no longer be allowed to enter the Gulf. This was a direct challenge to the freedom of navigation in Hormuz. It has since been blocked by Iran.
Rezai’s statements are often quite dangerous. Apart from this, a big claim was made on America and Israel’s attack on Iran in June. He had then said that Pakistan has given us assurance. If Israel uses nuclear bomb on Iran then they will also attack Israel with nuclear bomb. Apart from this, he had claimed that Tehran has such capabilities, which have been kept hidden from the international community.
However, Pakistan had rejected his claim. Then the Defense Minister Khwaja Muhammad Asif had called it baseless and irresponsible. Asif had condemned Israel. Then Israel targeted Iran, Yemen and Palestine. Asif had said that if Muslim nations do not unite, everyone will have to face the same fate. Apart from this, Pakistan has also condemned the murder of Khamenei.
Mohsin Rezai has been the commander in chief of IRGC.
Rezai served as Commander in Chief of the IRGC for 16 years (1981–97). He took command of it at the age of 27. Then only two years had passed since the Islamic Revolution. The IRGC has transformed from a militia to a multi-branch military force. It dominates Iran’s security and economic sectors.
Rezai wanted to become the President of Iran, but he did not win. After 1997, he worked as Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council. It is an assembly of 48 members, which directly advises the Supreme Leader. He is always known as a candidate contesting presidential elections. He contested the presidential election in the years 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2021, but was not successful.
Here, President Ibrahim Raisi, elected in 2021, died in an air crash in 2024. After this elections were held. Masoud Pezeshkian won in this. Mohsin Rezai was made the Vice President for Economic Affairs in the year 2025. But Iran was criticized due to its deteriorating economic conditions. Due to this the protests gained momentum in Iran. Interpol has issued a notice against Rezai.
