The company has confirmed that it is going to discontinue the end-to-end encryption feature available in direct messages on its platform Instagram. According to the information given on the company’s support page, this facility will stop working after May 8, 2026. After this announcement, questions are arising in the minds of many users that what is end-to-end encryption and why is Instagram deciding to remove it.
What is end-to-end encryption?
End-to-end encryption is a technology that makes online conversations extremely secure. When this feature is activated, only the sender and the recipient can read the sent messages. No third person in between, not even the company running the platform, can see these messages.

Meta says that very few people used this feature. According to the company, most of the users did not activate encrypted chat, so it was not practical to maintain it. Company spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby told tech website The Verge that the use of this feature was not as expected. For this reason, the company now wants to focus on those features which are used by a large number of users.
Debate regarding privacy and security
There has been a debate going on for a long time regarding encryption technology. While on one hand the supporters of privacy consider it necessary, on the other hand law enforcement agencies and child protection organizations have been expressing concern about it. He says that in a completely private encrypted system it can be difficult to detect wrongdoing because the messages cannot be seen by any third party.

The company has made it clear that encrypted chats will not be available on Instagram after May 8, 2026. Users who are currently using this facility will be given the option to download their messages and media in time.
