Political activities have intensified in the state regarding the assembly elections to be held in Assam. Congress’s ally Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has released the first list of its candidates on Tuesday (March 17, 2026). In the first list released by the party, the names of candidates for 10 assembly seats were announced.
On which seats did the party field candidates?
Party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi announced the names of the candidates at a press conference held in Guwahati. Gogoi said that as part of the alliance strategy, the party has decided its candidates for many assembly seats in the state. The seats where he has announced his candidates include Sadiya, Dibrugarh, Khowang, Berhampur, Sorupathar, Morigaon, Binakandi, Palashbari, Bajali and Guwahati (Central).
Agreement on many seats for alliance
AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that the party is compromising on many seats to maintain the unity of the alliance. He said that we are giving up many seats for the alliance. There are many constituencies where our party workers had suggested to contest the elections, but we are taking the decision from a comprehensive perspective. He further said that talks are still going on with ally Congress for seat sharing.
Workers’ resentment is natural: Gogoi
During this, Gogoi admitted that in some areas, supporters of alliance parties have expressed dissatisfaction over some seats being given to AJP. However, he termed it a natural part of the political process.
He said, ‘Party workers have their own aspirations. They work day and night for their party and want their leaders to contest elections, but when there is an alliance, there is a situation of give and take.
Main goal to defeat BJP: Gogoi
Gogoi clarified that the main objective of the alliance is to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said that our main objective is to defeat BJP. We will not take any decision which will benefit BJP.
