The impact of the ongoing war in the Middle East is now clearly visible on the energy sector. The situation has become more serious due to the attack on Qatar’s gas plant amidst the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. This may affect the supply of LPG gas in many countries including India. LPG i.e. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a fuel which is especially used for cooking in homes. In the current situation, its lack is being felt in many places.
According to the Worldometers report, the top 10 LPG producing countries in the world are as follows. America is at the first place, where about 32,914,647,000 MMcf LPG is produced annually. After this, Russia is at second place, where 22,728,734,000 MMcf is produced. Iran is in third place, where 9,097,956,245 MMcf LPG is produced. Canada is at fourth place (6,751,698,275 MMcf) and Algeria is at fifth place (6,491,744,560 MMcf).
Impact of increasing war in the Middle East
Qatar (6,000,936,690 MMcf) comes at number six. Norway is in seventh place (5,763,408,000 MMcf). China is at eighth place (4,559,625,595 MMcf) and Saudi Arabia is at ninth place (4,231,796,450 MMcf). UAE comes at tenth place (3,178,738,465 MMcf). It is clear from these figures that LPG production in the world is concentrated in the hands of a few big countries. In such a situation, the increasing war in the Middle East can directly impact global gas supply and prices. However, India is included in the top 30 in this list, its rank is 29.
What is LPG gas?
LPG is actually made up of two gases, namely propane and butane. These gases are kept under pressure and filled in liquid form in the cylinder. For this reason it is called liquefied. When the valve of the cylinder is opened, it becomes gas again and starts burning. It is mostly used at home for cooking. The gas cylinder that comes in the kitchen is LPG. Apart from this, it is also used as fuel in some vehicles like autos and cars.
LPG is also used in factories to run machines and generate heat. LPG is considered a good fuel because it burns cleanly and produces less smoke. This also reduces pollution. It can be easily transported from one place to another and it burns quickly and gives more heat.
