According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of this 7.4 magnitude earthquake was at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles) in the Molucca Sea. The American Monitoring Center has issued a warning indicating the possibility of a dangerous tsunami within a radius of 1 thousand kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.
Appeal to people to be careful
A 70-year-old woman died and another resident was injured in the Minahasa district of North Sulawesi, Indonesia’s disaster management agency said. The spokesperson of the Disaster Management Agency has appealed to the people not to return to the beaches or coastal areas until the authorities officially declare the situation normal. At least two aftershocks were felt after the main earthquake, both off the coast.

At least 602 people were killed in a 2022 magnitude 5.6 earthquake that struck the city of Cianjur in West Java, the deadliest in Indonesia since the 2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 4,300. In 2004, a powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Aceh province of Indonesia.
