‘Thank you Shahbaz Sharif, you…’, why did the Iranian President sing ballads in praise of Pakistan in a 45-minute phone call?

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif spoke on the phone with Iran’s President Masoud Pejeshkian for 45 minutes. In the conversation, Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to efforts to advance regional peace and security.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement that during about 45 minutes of talks on Sunday (April 19, 2026), the two leaders discussed the current regional situation in detail. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to President Pezeshkian and the Iranian leadership for sending a high-level delegation led by Iranian Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Islamabad for talks with the US on April 11 and 12.

America and Iran held direct talks in Islamabad on 11 and 12 April with the aim of ending the war, but these talks were inconclusive. Expectations of ceasefire have increased after US President Donald Trump announced the second round of talks. The ceasefire is ending on Wednesday and America and Iran may meet again in Islamabad on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Donald Trump also announced that US negotiators will be in Islamabad on Monday for peace talks with Iran. However, there has been no confirmation from Iran regarding Tehran’s participation in the second round of talks and Pakistan is trying to convince them for these talks.

Shehbaz Sharif also informed the Iranian President about his recent meetings with many world leaders including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. Shehbaz Sharif assured that Pakistan will remain fully committed to its honest and sincere efforts to enhance regional peace and security. According to the Pakistan PMO statement, Pejeshkian thanked Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Field Marshal for Pakistan’s strong commitment to the success of peace efforts, and also assured that relations between Iran and Pakistan will be further strengthened in the coming days.
